Q: Why would my tile roof need work if the tile looks fine?
A: Because the tile is not the waterproofing. The underlayment beneath it is, and it has a much shorter service life. Sound tile over failed underlayment is the most common tile roof we see.
Q: Can individual tiles be replaced?
A: Yes, and it is worth doing promptly. Isolated slipped or cracked tiles, failed ridge sections and bad flashing are all repairable — and repairing them is what protects the underlayment.
Q: How do I know if a storm damaged my tile roof?
A: Look along the ridge and hip lines for tiles sitting crooked or low, check the ground for tile fragments, and watch the soffit for staining. Stay off the roof — walking tile causes the damage you are looking for.
Q: Is tile better than shingle in a hurricane?
A: Correctly attached tile performs very well against wind. The variable is the attachment method and its condition, not the tile itself.
Q: Why does a tile re-roof cost more than shingle?
A: The tile has to come off, be sorted and stored, and go back down over new underlayment, or be replaced with matching profile. It is a longer job with more handling.
