A solar proposal can show where panels might fit without answering a separate question: what work does the roof need before anything is mounted on it? Resolve that question while the layout and schedule can still change.
For homeowners in Palm Coast and Flagler Beach, a roof inspection is a useful early step in planning. Ask your roofing contractor about the existing roof, and have a qualified solar contractor address the solar system, its design and installation.

Collect the Roof's History
Find the installation date, any product information, repair invoices and warranty paperwork you already have. Include records of leaks, additions and work around vents or other roof openings. If the age is uncertain, say so rather than treating a seller's estimate as a confirmed date.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Homeowner’s Guide to Solar advises considering roof age and the time until replacement, along with roof shape, slope and shading. The guide does not provide a universal roof-age cutoff for every home.
Ask the roofer to describe the condition observed, the areas they could not assess and any work recommended before installation. A dated inspection records findings at that visit; it is not a guarantee of an exact remaining service life.
Put Both Contractors on the Same Plan
Share the proposed panel layout with the roofer and the roof findings with the solar contractor. Ask them to resolve questions about attachment locations, roof penetrations, access and the sequence of work before the installation date is fixed.
- Which roof areas will the proposed array cover?
- What roofing work is recommended before mounting begins?
- Who is responsible for the attachment and weatherproofing details?
- How will the roof be inspected after the solar work?
- Who should you call if a leak appears afterward?
Get the responsibilities in writing. If one contractor says an item belongs to the other, settle that gap before work begins. Do not leave the homeowner to discover conflicting assumptions after the roof is covered.
Discuss Replacement Timing Without Guessing
If a roof replacement is recommended, ask what evidence supports doing it now and how the new roofing work would be coordinated with solar installation. If the roof is being retained, ask what future roofing access would involve.
For an existing array, contact the solar-system owner or service provider before arranging roofing work beneath it. Ask who can remove and reinstall equipment, what that service includes and how scheduling will work. Obtain a project-specific proposal rather than relying on a generic removal cost found online. Leave electrical isolation and equipment handling to qualified professionals.
Keep Separate Records Together
Roofing and solar warranties can cover different products and work. Request the actual terms and ask each provider how work by the other trade affects their responsibilities. Keep roof photographs, the final layout, contact names and completion paperwork in the same property file.
R&K can discuss the roofing assessment and any proposed roof work for a home in Flagler County. Contact the team before committing to a solar installation schedule so the roof's needs can be included in the plan. Solar design and electrical work should be confirmed with your solar contractor.
